Leicester’s Hidden Gems
We’re excited to launch the Hidden Gems project and we want you to get involved by submitting your stories about our theatre’s rich history!
The Y Theatre occupies a unique place in the history of Leicester as the city’s oldest surviving theatre and as part of the YMCA. Since 1900, our eclectic programme has included music, comedy, theatre, dance, new work and family shows. In recent years our focus has been supporting new, emerging and local artists, and being an open and welcoming space for the whole community.
Our project in 2024 is working with YMCA Leicestershire residents to uncover the Hidden Gems of our history. Residents will be digging into the archives to discover and document stories from across the theatre’s dramatic 123-year life. They will be presenting what they have found so far to the public for our annual Heritage Open Days in September, with the help of funding from Historic England.
“We’re so excited to reach out to the community of Leicester for their memories of our wonderful theatre’s colourful past. We want to hear about the people, performances and stories, past and present, that show what this hidden gem means to you. We know that there will be some real diamonds out there!”
